Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing ( GDL ) program

Alberta's Graduated Driver Licensing ( GDL ) program will ensure drivers, regardless of age, get the support, skills and experience they need to handle the complex task of driving. 
 
LEARNER STAGE ONE
 
To receive your learner's Licence ( Class 7 ) you must pass a vision test and a knowledge test. You can take a test for a Learner's Licence if you are 14 years of age or older. However, until you are 18 years old, you require parental consent. The learner stage lasts for a minimum of one year and can be renewed indefinitely. 
 
CONDITIONS:
YOU must drive with an accompanying driver who is fully licensed ( non-GDL ) 18 years of age or older, and sitting in the front passenger seat, you will be FINED and receive two demerit points on your driving record if you violate this condition.
YOU are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5 a.m. You will be FINED and receive two demerit points on your driving record if you violate this condition. New drivers are strongly encouraged to have a minimum of 60 hours of driving experience in various conditions before taking the basic road test.
  • TO become a probationary driver, you must:
  • Have had your learner's licence for a least one your
  • Pass the basic road test
  • Be 16 years of age or older
  • Once you have successfully completed the LEANER STAGE you will enter the PROBATIONARY STAGE.
 
  • YOU must have a seat belt for every passenger. You will be FINED and receive two demerit points on you driving record if you violate this condition.
  • YOU are allowed fewer demerit points ( 7 ) than fully licensed drivers ( 14 ) before your licence is suspended.
  • YOU can not serve as an accompanying driver.
  • TIME that your licence is suspended or cancelled is not included in the minimum time requirement.
  • UPGRADING to a Commercial Licence is not allowed.
  • YOU must have a zero alcohol level. Your licence will be suspended for 30 days and the vehicle will be seized for 7 days if you violate this condition.
PROBATIONARY STAGE TWO
To become a fully licensed driver you must :
 
  • SPEND a minimum of tow years in the probationary stage
  • NOT have had your licence suspended the twelve months prior to the end of the PROBATIONARY STAGE
  • PASS an advanced road test
  • YOU will need to display advanced driving skill, responsible decision making and proactive driving behaviour during the practical exam.
  • ADVANCED TEST will take approximately 60 minutes to complete.
